The Maoi at the Hut (wearing his winter cap) |
One of our favorite hangouts in Tucson is The Hut on 4th avenue. Great bartenders, great indoor/outdoor spaces and great music. Friday night we checked out the regular Friday band "Elevenacity", they play plenty of Grateful Dead tunes, but not exclusively. This night was special as the excellent Tucson fiddle player, Heather Hardy, was sitting in for the first set. It was a cold evening, the band was late getting started but once the outdoor heaters and the musicians warmed up it turned into a fine musical evening. After a fine "Dear Mr. Fantasy" they played a very jammy "Low Spark of High Heel Boys" with plenty of space for Heather to play some beautiful solos. Also noteworthy was "Only A River" from Bob Weir's Blue Mountain album (2016). Bob often plays this song with the Wolf Bros (it was co-written with Josh Ritter).

On Sunday the Hut was the locale for a nice double bill, Legion of Mario and the Alligators. Legion of Mario is a Tucson based "Jerry Garcia Band" cover band that often plays at the Hut and other venues in town. They always sound good with Mario Saravia delivering tasty guitar solos and nice vocals and Sunday afternoon was no exception. After the first set, the Alligators took over the stage, they are from LA and a Grateful Dead cover band that focuses on the songs that were performed by Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. The lead singer, Pete Carona, definitely brings the Pigpen vibe and enthusiasm to his performances and we were treated to excellent versions of "Lovelight", "Easy Wind", "Good Lovin'" and others. A great way to spend a cold, rainy Sunday afternoon in Tucson!
